GEM77A Reincarnate - The Gem Reaper

Post by gemsince88 »

A few of you may have seen this effort recently.

As a result I bought this from Brisbane.

Its a 2/77 TC that was originally auto.

f*#cking Persian Sand! I hate this colour! I can't get away from it.

There's a little bit of bog and a little bit of rust but generally straight.
The 5 speed conversion is a bit ordinary and the gearbox is crunchy.

Note the TX style dash. It has the TX style heater too.

What everyone wants on their Gemini, a weber and extractors.

Here's the plan!
This thing is going to be stripped to a rolling shell. Ill fix what needs to be fixed and paint it the same Cotillion white and black as the old one.
The complete driveline will be swapped along with the whole interior. Even parts of the suspension from the wreck. It will have the original springs and the RTS lower control arms as before. Little things like the rear number plate braket and heater box will be changed to the later style as well.
When all is done there will be a small twist, if I can pull it off, just to make it different.

A friend of mine came up from Melbourne on the weekend with his TC coupe to change his car back to manual. Only thing is we needed the flywheel and clutch out of this so the engine and box came out.

If we hadn't decided to convert his car then I would still be procrastinating about pulling it apart. I'm only just starting to get back into it after having all my previous work thrown against a wall.

I sold the engine too so I didn't have to find a home for it and my mate took the extractors. I have too much s*#t as it is.

I found out too why the gearbox was crunchy. When we drained it there was about 200ml of oil in it. So there you go you can drive 700km in a Gemini with no oil in the gearbox!

That's nice! All my photos have disappeared. f*#cking imageshack!

Well after running away from home with a lovely girl, having her ex chase us all over the countryside and conspire to kill me I am still here! Now I am settled in to a new home, with my girl and a new son, I have finally had a bit of time to work on this. It's not much but it's better than nothing.

Pulled the guards off expecting to find rust in the sill but one side is completely clean with the other having a 30mm diameter hole in it so not so bad. One of the guards though has about 20mm of bog all over it so it can go in the bin I think. Engine bay is just about stripped, dash is out and screens are out. Pulled the lower control arms out for some reason and found a lovely mismatched pair of cut springs off god only knows what. Another bin job!

Next is to complete pulling the interior out. Lets see how many years that takes me.

Nah you're not seeing things. This colour haunts me as my first Gem was this colour. I hated it then and still do which why this car is going white and the coupe is going green along with its Kadett C2 front.

apart from this bit
ImageDSC_0713 (Medium) by Justin Sherwood, on Flickr

floor is good apart from the tunnel being hacked up
ImageDSC_0721 (Medium) by Justin Sherwood, on Flickr

You may have noticed the rear axle was missing too. Another to add to the collection. I wont ever use this except for the pinion extension shaft and housing.
ImageDSC_0716 (Medium) by Justin Sherwood, on Flickr

What next? Well the roof and boot lid have surface rust under the paint so they will need to be back to bare metal. The rear has bog that needs to be sorted. A few little rust spots, the hole in the tunnel needs to be sorted, and guards need to be done then paint the whole thing.
One step at a time!

Didn't get much done this weekend.

Removed the early style number plate bracket and welded on the later style as they look better with the slim plates.

ImageDSC_0723 (Medium) by Justin Sherwood, on Flickr

I am still crap at welding! Back to the gas-less wire due to lack of funds. Just as well there isn't a lot of welding to do.

GM rear axle is now in. Still have to weld the sway bar mounts in though. Everything bar the panhard rod came off the wreck.
ImageDSC_0725 (Medium) by Justin Sherwood, on Flickr

Stripped the front suspension off the wreck. Going to use the springs, sway bar, shocks and left lower control arm. The rest apart from the brake calipers is buggered.
ImageDSC_0724 (Medium) by Justin Sherwood, on Flickr

Started fixing the rust in the sill and found it a little worse than I first thought.

Work was pretty quiet today so I dismantled the evaporator I'll be putting in. Cleaned all the crap out and pressure tested. Had to replace the tx as it was full of junk. It's good to go in now.

Cleaned up the springs, control arms and sway bar. Installed a new ball joint in the right control arm with one that a mate left me. Thanks Greg!

It's good working in a place with all the tools now.

It now has 4 wheels and no doors. Obviously the front suspension is back in and I took the doors off because I have this strange idea that I can use the doors off the wreck.

Fixed the rust here
ImageDSC_0726 (Medium) by Justin Sherwood, on Flickr

Started sanding the roof back with something that looked like a scotchbrite on steroids.
ImageDSC_0729 (Medium) by Justin Sherwood, on Flickr

When I put the AC in this I want to use a clutch fan on the engine but most viscous clutches don't fit. I had one that bolted to the water pump but stuck too far out. So I took it to work and dismantled it.

And cut 10mm out of the guts of it then welded it back together. Cleaned it up on the lathe.

I actually like Persian Sand, its not that bad!

Nice work on the clutch fan, i probably would have just gone thermo though. What'd you pinch the fan off, Diesel?
