Progressed the late model dash conversions. Must have despotted 200 welds but got the bits I needed installed. Photo below is a dummy fit of a TG dash to get the brackets on the A pillar positioned correctly

Image

Finished the repair to the firewall upper section and sanded and primed the inner guards and chasis rail.

Image

Started on the radiator support panel. Modified the bolt up point for the radiator to take an alloy radiator. Also fitted a brace to the middle of the support panel where the ridge is located. This section is always getting bent about by engine fits etc. The brace makes an amazing difference to the stiffness of the whole panel. Think I might retro fit my other gems with this simple mod.

Hi Jonno,

You would not do a dash conversion unless you were building up from a shell in my opinion. Most of the hard work is extracting the components from the donor without wrecking them. In my case I haver a lot of late interior model bits but not muchearly stuff so it pushed me to do the conversion. Advantages are:

- crack free dashes are easier to find or cheaper to fix
- you can run a late model loom with relays - no more melting fuse boxes
- taco dash for late model very common
- the articulated steering wheel sits central and square
- easier to change the colour as the dash pad detaches and leaves hard plastics

Progressed to the stage where I need to flip the body on its side to do any work. This is my 4th gem shell on this frame but this time I have chained the 3 legs to the garage floor (old age and caution). Patch a few holes, tidy up the floor/boot pan welds, epoxy prime and underbody seal. Will do the body work on the beaver panel while it is sitting vertical.

Pieced together a couple of guards, welded up the parcel shelf stripped the roof and primed up the radiator support panel. Using epoxy primer for the first tiem - boy that stuff stinks.

Had to grit blast a couple of rust spots on the roof but bought glass beads by mistake. They bounce well. I ended up with a layer of beads 10 m down the driveway.

Shell is back on four (little) wheels. All the welding finished except for a bit of repair around the fuel filler.

Underbody is has been epoxy primed and finished in a ripple underbody finish. Beaver and radiator support panel repaired but will need a bit of finishing work. Guards fitted and the doors and bonnet temporarily back on to check guard alignment.

Stripping down both rear quarter panel a has been the main task of the week. The left has been repaired before but the body filler was rotten and rust was starting underneath. Have worked to get some the high spots flatter to reduce the amount of replacement fill.

Did a search under the house on hands and knees and came up with a TX grill, 2 lots of headlight surrounds and a vent cover.

The G200 in my sons car in the intended donor but it is having some head problems. Tossing up whether to get the head fixed properly and go G200Z or rebore on a G180Z that is sitting under the bench or a G161Z that only needs rings and bearings.

Suspect the next month will be a lot of filling and sanding to get the shell tip-top for painting.

My grandaughter announced she wanted the car painted red. Last week it was purple and pink before that. I am pushing for Palais White but I am not going to win this one.

No photo - just look at the photo above and imagine the rear quarters painted grey epoxy

My fingers and sore from sanding and filling. I hate this stage. You can spend a month doing body prep and nothing seems to progress much. It is not until the top coat is on you appreciate the effort (or lack there of).

I have decided to go with the the G180Z and it is in the shop now getting new 1mm O/S bore and pistons. The G200Z may be a hassle to register so will probably sell it. Not sure about aspiration - too many choices about 40 carbies in the shed to choose from, mostly Webers.

Yeah it's like that. Hours of things no one will ever see/understand how much you put in.

Is there any job more tedious than blocking out.

Nearly finished blocking out the hi build primer. Have decided to go with 1K paint and do it myself. Can't justify the cost of 2K applied by a professional for a paint job that the kids won't treat with any respect. Also there is a bit more filler in this car then I would like siting under an expensive paint job.

The G180 has been bored and Elky came good with a crankshaft (he had 5 of them). Probably sell the G200Z while it is still sitting in the TF so potential buyers can take it round the block.

Ok so progress....

- rear end is complete with the Koni's and the kings
- Rewired except for dash loom
- K frame is in with some temporary front suspension
- rear parcel shef and rear window fitted - complete with 3 functional child restraint points

Image

Working on the interior today started fitting the new carpet.

Image

Decided the put the rear speakers in the side panels instead of the parcel shelf. One sheet of ply behind sandwiched (glued and screwed to another piece flush in the lip. finished with boat carpet.

Image

Potentially busy week this week. Should get the block back which was delayed becasue 2 con rods were cactus and had to be replaced. Also expect the front suspension goodies from rock auto and the rubber shop has promised my partial rubber kit by the end of the week. Alos need to get up to see Elky and pick up a rear side window (as the shell came with two rigth hand side ones.
