Dirty Gypsy found

Post by GEMWRC »

You might have seen this in the f/s sale ads - Basically it was on Gumtree and headed for the crushers , i rang him up a few hours later (no one else even rang) and after driving to Bullsbrook to check it out, got it delivered to storage .

The ad read something cool about brother of Sandman and rival of Escort Sundowner , The Gemini Gypsy was Holdens Version . Save this car from the crushers .... Pics from the advert.

And on arrival . It was pretty obvious it was going to be run down but it wasnt too bad . Motor was gone and most parts were removed and stored in the back - including the guages and seats .. We left the car there and it was towed for us.
Image

While waiting for an eternity we actually picked up some SL/E Rims that the Red Gypsy was missing from Jazzza . When we got back the Rust bucket had arrived and we swapped the flat tyres drained the water and had a search through the car .
Image

Finding the badges that we hadn't seen yet and the Guages these cars are well known for .
Image

Tartan seats were a special option for this Gemini and they seemed ok . Somehow survived in the back of the van .
Image

Another surprise was the mint carpet ,underlay and spare wheel cover.
Image
Image
Image

Ok so YUCK the car has/had good floors but has been out in the weather for a while and been collecting water , we made some drain holes and its seems solid and sound . Will inspect further soon .
Image

Now for the bad . Mainly surface rust and some dents , Few options , new roof or try fix it . :?: This is the worst part of the car , The body is not rusted out but the roof is rooted.
Image

Parts Needed List :
SL/E Centercaps
TF TG SL/X Steering Wheel
Wagon Door Trims
Plastic Door Handle Surrounds
Fuel Door
Windscreen
TF TG Shift knob
Tape Deck
AC System

Oh yeah and this is the Goal - First step tho is to protect it from further damage . Then its gotta wait in line .
Image

The next day i poured a heap of rust convertor onto the roof and rubbed it on with a cloth . Then i wanted to check out the floors .

Passenger side before
Image

After scraping all the sound deadener off it revealed a good floor pan . Only one rusty hole which i punched out by accident .
Image

Drivers side was just as good and nothing nasty was discovered here.
Image

Image

So i sprayed on heaps of rust convertor again .
Image

Beaver is a little dented and has some f/glass in it .
Image

Now for more Ugly .. Under the hood shots reveal a dusty engine bay with small rust on the right and repaired on the left . Aircon is long gone ,along with the motor . I did get a 5spd with the car though .. Im thinking G200/161 will fill this hole.
Image

And the codes for Trim Paint etc

If anyone has any pictures of a Red Gypsy i would like to see them . I only have pictures of white or blue versions . Im going to try save the roof and see how it goes . Any ideas are welcome .

Well, looks like you scored on this one man. Nice work. When i saw the price tag and the open sunroof i thought she'd be way ratty. It doesn't look too bad, from the photos.

Nice score ... the roof looks saveable in the pic's,you could cut a fill in section for the sun roof from a sedan.

The xx7 on the compliance plate means it a genuine gypsy.

There is a pic of a red gypsy half way down this page in this link..

Lets start with this short advert from youtube which features a Flamenco Red Gypsy Van . SO much Win https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oA7gWq5kZbM&nomobile=1

Back in 2013 !! I treated the roof next . And it starting looking a little better , but still pretty dam scary .
You can see it had a factory type roof rack . All the white spots are bog covering the holes . Its like the previous owner stripped the roof back and attempted repairing the roof and left it outside to rust ..
Image

After i flooded the floors with rust convertor I painted on Rustkill Red Oxide Enamel .
Image

I sealed the roof with more Rustkill Enamel .
Image

This is where it Sat until December 2014 .

Hey Anthony :)
I only have a few pics from the repairs . I get the rest soon .

Marty told me the roof was paint stripped several times and then acid washed . He said it wont come back .
I have no idea but I can attack it again before paint ..

Image

A roof swap was estimated at roughly 2k :( . This is the sunroof repair panel. He also fit an extra roof bow directly under it .

Image

I had some bad cancer up front on both side. Ouch

Image

Image

There was a fist sized hole here from me "Checking" how rusty it was .
The entire corner and battery plate was welded in from a donor. haha

Image

The rear floorpan was replaced entirely and sections of the lower quarter/beaver

Image

Next round of rust repairs is lower A pillars . I think the sills are dented from a forklift .
Then it comes home . My friend is going to take over the next stage with whatever help I can offer .
He replaced the radiator support and resprayed my TG when I first joined up here ..

The guys working on it now are confident its on the right track even though a few corners have been cut . The whole body would have been blasted if i wasnt a broke ass Gemaholic . Roof would have been replaced completely .
Im just the sod throwing money at it

Peace
