My 84 TG Gem Project

Post by 84GEMNI »

Hey all

As a kid from when I was in Primary School I've always wanted to build a Gemini, And now I'm doing just that but as a father son project with my little boy so we can cruise down to Holden shows and enjoy the car.

I picked up this 1984 TG Gemini which had been sitting on a stack of pallets for 6-7 years. the pic's speak for them selves.

Plans/Vision for the car is for it to be Red (wife picked that colour) have it running an SR20det and 5 Speed but over the period of the build I'm sure things may change.

Anyway here are some pic's of when I got her home and In the Garage and having a look at it.

Perhaps not what you want to hear but my head would say, see if you could get another body and use this one as a parts source.
TG's are not that rare. If you are going to invest a lot of time and money on a project best to start with the best body you can find.

If it was a coupe i would try and save it but not a sedan, unless I could not find something better.

If your heart says you want to save this thing (and I get that) check really closely the sub frames where they connect to the A pillar because if the glass has been out water could have penetrated the the opening in the sill / kick plate area. Rust in the thin metal at the bottom of the A frames is fixable but if the heavier sections that make up the sub frame are rusty its crusher time.

Best of luck with. There are plenty of threads of on panel and floor replacement on this site for tips if that is the way you go.

Jonno have you done a SR20 Swap in yours? is that what you mean by you have me Covered?

tobytj It has Crossed my mind after looking real close at the car as for the sub frames from what i can see they don't look too bad, the biggest places the care has its worst rust is of course the floor in just about every part of it the bottom seals do have some bubbles of rust forming but not super bad and I'm pretty sure it can be all fixed.

I got this shell for $100 so really its something to practice on and just have a real crack at something out side of my comfort zone as iv never welded before, I've got my dad telling me if i bit off more then i can chew then just chew harder not only have i got my dads support but i have my wifes also with her saying its a project just take your time have just have a go hahaha.

So today after work I took the front guards off to see what it was like (rust wise) and to me it don't look all that bad but when i got up under it to have a good look well the floor its just rust and nothing else.

I really got some work cut out for me but I'm keen to take on the challenge head on with a fight!

Passengers Side

Passengers side wheel arch just behind the wheel

Top section where the guard bolts too

Drivers side is a little more worse for ware but not too bad I guess

The boot floor

The floor is what my wife describes thing as eye saw hahah

And took some shots of it out side after washing the mold and crap from off it.

The rust under the guard and around the A frame is actually pretty minor.

The area around the back seat is going to be tricky as it is new where the trailing arms and torque tube connect to the body. So fixing it and restoring structural integrity is a challenge - particularly if you plan to up the horse power.

Normally you never see rust in this area but I guess if you leave the rear glass out for several years that is what you get.

Yer I didn't see the full extent of the rust as it was resting on Pallets I'll try and find a pic from the add when i seen it, I'm pretty sure i saved it. But as for the floor and where the torque tube bolts too i waqs worried at the start but because I'm going a SR20det with a bit more poke then stock I've thought about getting a commo diff shortened for it to eliminate the torque tube and so i will be able to run the 5 stud commo pattern instead of the 4 stud Gemi one. the only issues I have is like what you said with the rust being so close to where the control arm bolts too.

I did a bit of work over the weekend cutting sections out of the donor shell so it they can be put where the rust was.

This is the very first time iv tried something like this, and though its small I'm pretty damn happy with how good the fitment was but to be honest it was as hard as i thought it would be either hahahah

Got all that rusty section cut out..... and yes i will be replacing the metal behind it also before i weld the piece in.

Shortened Commo diffs is a conversion that you see less of now that Altra 9 LSD centres and heavy duty axles are available for the standard gemini housing. Combined with a beefed up torque tube shaft you get a stronged rear end than a commo.
