My temporary runaround

Post by DryftKult »

ok I bought this crappa meteor right? was supposed to just get me to brisbane and last me long enough to find a less embarrasing and more suitable car to buy, unfortunatly on the 3rd day of registration it chopped a rod bearing and siezed within 3 mins of highway driving, fancy that huh?

so now with bugger all cash and very little time, I gotta fix it.

the pos in question is a gc ford meteor.
Image

luckily enough my father has not long bought a brand new car and was lending his old modified ke laser ghia wagon to my brother and his missus under the agreement that they would buy it off him for $1500... which didn't happen but that's not the point... coz now it's mine

a few months of my sister in law's driving has seen it's road going life in it's current guise come to en end as it now smells like toddlers soaked in baby s*#t and old stale milk (you never get that smell out of an older family vehicle) and boasts more dents than a golf ball... also ran out of rego.
Image

so seing as these vehicles are closely related and use the same base engine (b6 sohc) I'm swapping them out... all the good shiznit is goin into the meteor just for s*)ts and giggles.

list includes:
front & rear brakes (identicle to tx3 fwd)
suspension struts
front seats
carpet
instrument cluster
electric sideview mirrors
door trims
motor and all fuel injection equipment
fuel tank
16" alloy wheels
2" exhaust

the difference between the meteor and laser engines is that the lasers engine is fuel injected and uses hydraulic lifters. all these parts are direct bolt on swaps (besides the wiring looms for the efi and sideview mirrors) so will be relativly easy.

have already fitted the wheels just to see what it will look like
Image

will look better once I'v cleaned the wheels and thrown in the struts with lowered springs.

just found out that the wagon is still within it rego renewal period, so I'm gonna convert it to auto. I just sprayed the interior with febreze, some air freshner and threw in a crucafix to see if I can get rid of the smell will call qld transport on monday and see how much rego I'll get back from the meteor if I cancel it's rego.

the wagon is quite rare so I'll be happy with it, the laser buffs desire then highly hehe, and this ones a ghia which makes it rarer than most, never seen another ghia wagon besides this one and hardly anyong on the fordlaser forums even knew there were ke ghia wagons released.

Kents :P

ok update on the wagon:

fitted Brand new front disk rotors and brake hoses

started cleaning up the interior

purchased a 4 channel amp for next to nothing from a good mate

started builting a twin 12" sub enclosure for the cargo area

removed engine and transmission for auto conversion and also replacing a few parts on the motor (brand new alternator, starter motor, flexplate)

driveshafts from meteor are brand new as are the cv joints so they will be going in also

have decided that once I'm in brisbane I'll be repainting the wagon and selling it once I'v saved enough money as I'm looking to buy a Purvis Eureka
Image

not everyones cup of tea but I don't mind em, their all fibreglass so you can really do some magic with the look of the car, just like this bloke is doing
Image

you can find these things for cheap (around $2500 - $10000) in poor to exelent condition if you look hard enough and with less than 800kg curb weight they go hard. have seen everything from 4 cylinder pushrod ford engines, subaru ej20's, turbo rotaries all the way up to small block v8's in these things and a turbo rotary gives you a 0 - 100 speed of just under 5 seconds, funnnn!

and what makes that a problem?

it's only the chassis that has to stay vw, everything else can be changed.

the search has already started, atm I'm just searching forums and tech sites looking for a strong engine/transaxle combination that's gonna be strong enough, would like to run an ej20t but as I require an automatic my transmission will need to be chosen carefully. am considering the semi automatic from a superbug as I'v been told they can take some power and would be a little more wrist friendly than a standard type manual as the shifter rocks back and forth like a sequential transmission which I could prolly hack. another reek owner I have met through an msn groupe has a local vdub specialist who has built a v8 powered combi using an automatic so he's going to find out what transmission has been used for the application.

motor is almost completly back in, just hooking up the loom and all the ancilaries, refit the driveshafts, bleed the brakes and she should be sweet.

will be fixing little things and may even have slimer give it a respray just b4 I sell it to get max return on it as it should look and operate mint when the time comes to sell. with all the accessories and the fact that ke ghia wags are far and few between I should fetch a good price on it from one of the laser buffs.

Excuse my ignorance, but why cant you drive manual?

But that there is the problem. The VW chassis has been around since the 30's, the Eureka since the early 80's. Both are fairly out dated, particularly the VW's swing-axle type chassis. The fact that its also Rear engined makes things harder too, seeing as you NEED a transaxle. Your also looking at doing some serious fibreglassing work which pretty much means the majority of the body will be built from scratch, so with that in mind [and the fact that i remember you were fairly adept with a welder] id look at starting from scratch.

Get a mkII MR2 shell and cut bits and pieces out. Rear quarters you wont want, rear beaver, front skin, roof skin. Just leave the front and rear firewalls, the pillars and the sills. Being Mid engined RWD means your choices in terms of engine are COMPLETELY opened up. Pretty much ANY FWD engine and gearbox could be made to work. Id grab the Camry V6 with the 4speed auto, they make good power and they are all alloy. Seeing as your using the donor cars suspension etc engineering isnt as hard as youd think. Only thing limiting you is your imagination.

reason I can't drive a manual is because I broke my wrist 3 times inside of 22 months and as such the cartilage in my wrist is pretty much destroyed unless I go in for surgery (not likely to happen any time soon).

that's the reason I'm opting for the semi automatic from a superbug as it can be fitted with a higher ratio gearset from a later model manual and shift is operated by a switch equiped shifter similar to operation as a sequential transmission but gears are actually changed electrically and pneumatically as is the clutch, a little more advanced that I thought a transaxel from the era would be but surprise surprise.

while I like the idea of cutting up an mr2 it's more work than I'd like and while I am quite adept with a decent welder I don't really enjoy it at all.

I don't plan on changing the eureka's body that great a deal, just some more updated side skirts and front and rear bars like this but of different design obviously.

^^^^^^^^^^^

That is f*#cking HORN!!!!!!
I want one, Id sell both left testicles for one.
that thing with the kit like that and a wide body job would look f*#cking mean.
It almost looks like it deserves a Ferrari badge.

I was fortunate to see 3 of these all driving in convoy past work one afternoon (up hume Hwy, towards sydney)

How about an Audi transaxle, Fully electronic, and tiptronic manual shifting?
Yea, a little more pricey, but with a little creative thought and effort you could even adapt one of the quattro 4wd transaxles and get drive to the front wheels too. Getting a Diff to spin the other way might be an issue though?
Dunno, just a thought.
