all aussie ones ran the 2L sirius 4G63 sohc 8 valve motor, think 4ZC1 with a couple of balance shafts and you're pretty close to the money. the dohc 4G63 heads bolt on, but then you have to engineer everything else for the rwd orientation. 350rwhp is straight forward with the sohc head, anything over that you're better off going twin cam.
all the yank ones were G54B 2.6 astron type motor, very similar to the astron 2's in the last of the sigmas and 2.6 tritons etc, had oil squiters and a revised oiling/cooling system compared to a normal asstron. still like driving a diesel though.
my widebody is a jap spec car, it unfortunately has the G54B, the japs had either 2L 8 valve 4G63, the gun dash 12v sohc 4G63, or the G54B. the 12V dash widebodies are worth the equivalent of about au$25000 as they are the pick and very rare, under 100 made. having said that, my widey is one of only 800 made for the JDM market. heaps of widies sold in the us, and quite a few in europe too.. there are only about 20 or so wideys in oz, all grey imports like mine. i have a 4G64 2.4 and a dohc head here for mine when the G54B s*)ts itself..
a sohc starion motor would be a good/easy swap in a gem, just a custom sump and engine mounts needed. be easier than an SR20..

been playing with the chev a bit lately, put a new water pump on it, chevparts in sydney had em in stock
also adjusted handbrake so i can drive it in and out of my workshop (master cyl seized so no foot brakes), discovered all the lights still work except for the LH brake light, hell, even the interior lights work fine from BOTH doors!
put it up on the hoist and its soooooooo clean underneath, just needs the sills done and a few other little spots of rust..
