Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
went out to the shed yesterday morning with all intentions of fully welding the rails and maybe starting on welding in the 4 link mounts, did half an inch of weld and the blood thing starts spluttering! out of gas ......

Looks good.
I hear it's getting an LS1 in it.
I'm not sure but I read it on the internet.

Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
Decided to finish welding up some of the 4 link frame and then add a few braces before cutting the inner guards out some more, promptly ran out of mig wire lol!
Lucky Bunnings is open late and has 5kg rolls on the shelf!
So theres not much left of the original rear floor and inner guards
I need to wait till I have the diff in before I go too far with the wheel tubs, and that is going to have to wait till I get the correct mounting plates for the diff, the ones I got were for 9inch and the holes in them are about 8mm too large for a borg warner, so I have sent them back and just waiting on the right ones to arrive.
Plenty more I can do in the mean time though in preparation for all that
Hoping to go to the steel joint on the weekend and get some lengths to use for making the front chassis rails, these will go from the front of the 4 link frame, up the length of the car, and replace the original engine bay front end rails, and attach to the cross member and stop at the radiator

I gave it all to my brother, he works at a quarry and they stock pile steel for recycling and that is what they use for end of year party, all for the cause!

Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
So while I was waiting on the correct diff mounting plates to arrive I started working on making the front chassis rails, I've got it roughly worked out, needs a few tweaks on the angle for the part where the crossmember mounts, but should be good, and once I get the rear end back on the ground i'll be alble to do a bit more on it ie removing the front end and such.

Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
So last night the diff plates were waiting for me at the front door! so the front chassis rails got pushed to the side so I could get it all happening :punk:
needless to say I'm very excited!
Next step will be to make some bars to go in place of the coil overs to get the right ride height then put some wheels on and see how it all sits in the guard.

Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
Are you replacing the whole front end Sam? Those original rails look pretty beefy as they are if you could tie them into the new rear end...

Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
yes replacing the original sub frame with these rails, there will also be a bar from the roll cage through the firewall to tie into the rails.
as for the strength of that original rail, don't let it fool you, its weak as piss, and particularly the legs that connect to the floor of the car!

Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
Made up some 25mm square tube coil overs to hold the car up so I could get an idea of how it sits, its definitely nice and low, I plan on a slightly larger slick so it will help a bit, but will need to see how it all sits with the engine and such in it and go from there.
