Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
i also purchased some new rear rims, these are 15 x 10 in, with 4 inch more dish than the rim below.
the rim wiht tyre on it is the 15 x 7's that i had on the gemini, and it has a 26 x 10in tyre on it.
with as much done as we could with the engine in it was time to remove it so i could finish off the firewall.

Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
With a baby fast approaching it was Marie's baby shower, she was out for the whole day pretty much so i invited dad and some brothers over, also firebug was loitering there
and we got the firewall pretty much sorted, its still got a few bits of welding to do and a heap of grinding but its on the home stretch.
we also got a heap of no longer needed holes filled up too.

Just another shot of the front of the car for perspective.
And while dad and my brother were busy with the mig on the firewall i cracked out the tig to finish off the steering rack, it was cut and tacked together but never finished off .... till now.
and barely a week after the baby shower the baby decided she wasn't staying in there any longer and came to be 4 weeks early! Meet little Claire!

Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
it was clear Claire was born to be a racer, barely a week old and she was in her first 5 point harness (albiet not too happy!)
this was a transfer from Newcaslte hospital to Maitland (closer to home for us and no longer needed to be in intensive care at newcastle)

Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
i've been saying for a long time that i wanted a nutcert kit, so for christmas i finally got one!
i used it to mount some nuts in the firewall for the map sensor bracket, before the firewall was finished i just stuck my hand through the hole and put the nuts on them, so this was a real bonus!
i've since purchased some imperial mandrels and nuts for it so it mostly covers anything i need!No matter what the question is, the answer is always more horsepower!!

Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
despite most of summer being stinking hot dad and i got stuck into some panel work (as a slightly cooler alternative to welding)
dad has a technique of getting rust converter, and a piece of steel wool, rub it over the rusty panel till all the surface rust is loosened then wipe it off with a cloth, comes up mint!
after all this we gave it a light coat of primer.

Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
I also got a supercheap auto gift card for christmas so i used it to buy some seam sealer, and got stuck into testing it out on the boot!
so since this picture we have painted inside the boot with a finish product, but i dont have a picture of it.
thats about it at the moment, i have been a bit side tracked with some other projects but hoping to get back into the FX very soon. Its basically a shell on stands at the moment, and i want to finish some welds in the 4 link area, and the under floor/seat area then i can start applying some under body spray while its up on stands, then i can start to put the rear back together.
i am also working on finishing the firewall and steering so i can get the front back on the ground too.
it works, but its f*#cking messy s*#t!so since this picture we have painted inside the boot with a finish product, but i dont have a picture of it.

Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
its been a long time coming for this diff, but i have got the money there for axles now and that was the last piece of the puzzle, so i thought i should get stuck into the diff shortening so i could work out when lengths the axles needed to be.
a friend borrowed a diff to use for working out how much to shorten his to fit into a VP so he cut shortrened and welded the ends back on, and once he was finished i got it to use for my setup which is much shorter so there was still enough left on the ends of the diff tubes.
so i spent what seemed like hours cutting all the mounts off and then grinding back what was left. i knew i needed to make it 4 inch narrower each side compared to the diff that was in the car, and i also wanted to get the yoke in the centre of the car, so i measured ten times and i think i finally got all the offsets right, i also had to take into account the approx 35mm for the weld on ends, and had to make sure they had the same depth in the ends for the bearing seats and so on and so forth.
so its finally cut at where i hope is going to be the right lengths, the plan now is to dummy it up in the car with the 4 link plates and weld on ends all tack welded on, just to make sure its actually right before i go and finalise all the welding.
these weld on ends look really nice, and for $90 i think it was, saves alot of time and effort!

Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
yeah and weight, when i used to make them before i'd sleeve the tubes with another piece of tube, 200mm long, so definitely would have added a few kg's!
