Car Trailer - the next generation
So after a legal mishap with my old trailer , it got sold and the funds from the sale were put towards making a new "improved" car trailer.
This trailer will be running gemini stud pattern and cable brakes.
After pricing around trailer parts , the lot was purchased for just shy of $1000 ( initial quote was for $650 WTF????? ).
Steel was priced from various sources , but finally bought through a friends work , giving a substantial saving!!
He also , out of the kindness of his heart , cut it all to size after we sat down and drew up "plans" and formulated a cut list , and how much metal would be needed.
This came to just under $600 in total.
So with all the bits at my place , ready to go , i set upon the task at hand.
So here is the 2 piles pf parts
setting frame up close to square
After frame was squared up , braced and welded , it fell 3mm out of square , so out came the portapower to true it back up
Once squared up , the centre sections were thrown in , measured to suit the 2mm 1200x2400 sheets to use as the floor ( these will be chopped to exact size needed through my work with the guillotine.
Trailer is currently in the "upside down" stage , and once the frame is finished , it'll be flipped over for topside welding , and the floor to be done.

here is the frame still upside down , getting all joins finish welded ready for flipping
front of trailer showing all supports before welding
shot of drawbar recessed into main front bearing ( same as old trailer , to help keep it low for towing behind my car )
here is the runners for the ramps.Cut into frame and reinforced with 6mm plate.
Im leaning towards metal ramps , but may go with timber sleepers first
Closeup of recess before plate is welded in
flipped now , with plate welded in under ramp area and top welded and ground down flat ( didnt need much ) , and all top joins painted with Galmet red , to help stop rust on bare metal
first sheet ( 1200x2400x2mm cut to size ) being fitted and positioned
All sheets on , it was this point i realized the work guillotine didn't cut square.. this would be the reason there were repair guys in on friday fixing it.... woulda been nice if it was fixed BEFORE i cut my stuff... but it got cut for free... so i shouldn't complain!!!
more tomorrow i hope , should have top welded on and starting to put axles together

no names , and shouldnt be heavy , last trailer was 560kg ( by memory ).Gemi Coupe wrote:has it got a name?
im thinking Gertrude, coz its gonna be one heavy pig!
Lookin good though, very interesting to see what goes into building a decent trailer.
I am reconsidering building my own, looks like too much hard work
work wise it hasnt taken me that much to get it to the stage its at.
making sure the axles align is the real test!!!

i have to get a weigh bridge certificate before i register it , so i'll know exact weight then.Gemi Coupe wrote:well please remember to post up the weight, because id be very interested to know.
my biggest issue is i tend to not measure things, i build things the same way Greg does, just without the constant beer supply
