Thanks folks! I'll have to make sure the footage is worth the wait when it's done  I'm pretty happy with how the last few videos [of our trip to Japan, and my teammate's 32] came out, but they definitely need moar Gemini.

You're on! Keeeeen as beans. I was going to have this challenge with Javi but I think he's already won on a technicality! I think his is running but has some kinks to iron out...

Not running! Had to rip the loom / ECU out to swap for a Delco setup...

Right, you two, it's on! Let's do this thing... haha

Update time! This website needs more 4/5 link pictures :D
- New bearings pressed onto the spool centre after I blew up the old ones (seriously, many pieces, wow) trying to use a rubber mallet as a press...
- Centre backlash "set" by feel, <0.5mm backlash but still some (ie room for oil/thermal expansion). The crown and pinion are a matched set with no obvious wear. The plan is to get the thing together and running and then suss it out after the first event if it makes any noise. Time is of the essence and the budget is drawn pretty thin.
- Old wheel bearings pressed back onto axles by Yours Truly, I don't have a press and these things are a pain in the ass, so I welded up some crazy s*#t and used spring compressors and oil to get them on there myself. Not fun, but to give you some idea, apparently Toyota dealers charge around $600 just for the labour of press fitting these. Took me a day and a half, some creativity and a lot of elbow grease.
- Axles fitted, my custom calliper brackets fitted up, they're just right! Except I need the drill holes enlargened as they were drilled smaller than I'd specified... dropping them off to have that done tomorrow as I don't have the right size drill bit.
- Discs, the place that drilled them out for me also used the wrong size (9/16" instead of 12mm) so they're sloppy as, but it turns out they're just hub-centric enough that once tightened up they're straight and don't move. Whew... Starting to think they're R31 discs though, and if they are, I'll just replace them. TBA.
-Brake lines, had my first experience at bending and flaring brake line, all in all I think I've done alright, I still need to do a few more flares but they're almost done... Then I have to do the hydro and rear circuit on the car side. Will need a new flexi line anyway.
-Swaybar, turns out the rear facing K-mac "seems to fit, just" - but you have to rotate the mounting brackets just a little so the swaybar clears the diff housing (where the hat would usually be), but hopefully doesn't foul on the panhard rod. It's a tight fit, I think this will work. Had to space up the brake line tee to clear one bracket.

Anyway, it's starting to actually look like the arse end of a car now, which is great. Here's some happy snaps.

Soon you guys might even get to see the wheels... maybe ;)

x 2

I know this is not an issue for a track car but I will make the point for anyone who contemplates uses a similar set up on a road car.

The brake calipers being used above are single piston callipers which means that the piston assembly floats on two locating pins. The pads themselves are supported by a carrier that transmits the braking load to the rear axle assembly. The caliper applies the squeeze to the pads but does not take any braking load. The caliper moves side to side a bit as you apply the brakes and release them. The calliper also creeps along the locating pins as the pads wear.

Now to my point. Single piston callipers are normally fitted with a 150mm rubber brake hose between the rigid brake line and the calliper to accommodate calliper movement. A rigid direct connection as shown above is likely to fatigue and crack eventually if used as a daily drive.

Twin piston calliper brakes, such as gemini stock brakes, don't have this issue because the carrier and calliper are a single fixed unit and only the pistons move.

Good point Toby, I hadn't thought of that!

I will keep an eye on it anyway. Hopefully given the huge length of the hard lines they'll be fine, but I hate doing things the wrong way, even if my execution is sloppy anyway... so I'm glad to have been made aware of it! :D On a sidenote I will be referring to your write-up for my street TE soon, once I've finished this build - I'll be doing the Piazza disc conversion onto an import ZZ/R LSD diff with no brakes. Keen as!

Diff is now brush painted black and ready to throw in tomorrow on my RDO, and then on to other things! There's a month and a half to go until the event I'd like to enter, and the list is still looking pretty daunting, but it's not over yet...

Hey mate, if you have any issues with the Megasquirt let me know. I have built two of them and helped with a few others, they can be a bit of a challenge to set up sometimes if you don't have a background in electronics.

By the way Eli, that plenum was designed for an XF falcon throttle body. Looks like you have a later model throttle body there (EF???) That may be why you had so many issues with it, I never fitted a throttle body to it so I cant say for certain.

It would not be hard or expensive to set up some idle control on that thing, and a cam always sounds tougher idling a bit lower.
