I had brown smoke coming from my old gem, and turned out to be a rusted out muffler...may not be the same, but hey...worth a shot yeah?

When we pulled it apart, the cam chain stayed on the sprockets, we used wire and stuff to hold it in place while we rmoved the head so that the timing chain stayed in place. We kept tension on it at all times, and it didn't move out of place.So I dont think its anything to do with a tooth out. Maybe...
