Gearbox Freshen Up
Gearbox Freshen Up
Well I got my gearbox out of the car at the moment so just wondering if there is anything I can do to it myself relatively easily while its out? obviously change the oil, is it easy to get a hold of and replace the rear seal? Am getting a new clutch kit etc, even if I have to open the gearbox... anything easily replaced in there?
Ive got a spare 5-Speed maybe I can mix and match parts which are better?
or is it a matter of pretty much can only take it to a workshop and be completely rebuilt...
Cheers

What are the manufacturer codes for the gemini 5 speed? Its MU somthing isnt it?
Maybe there is a bearing place that has a kit?
Is it possible to buy new syncro's anymore?
Ive never had a box apart before... would it be possible to say, pull apart a 4 speed and put the 3rd / 4th syncro's on 1st / 2nd in the 5speed?

You can interchange syncro hubs and rings between 4 and 5 speed boxes. However the gears are different even though they are the same ratios. You will need access to a bearing press to change the front pinion shaft bearing and the rear mainshaft bearing. If you have not pulled a gearbox apart and you have time to spare and a reasonable workshop manual, then its a good learing experience.Manual gearboxes look pretty scary but their operation is pretty simple once you rebuild a few.

A mates dad used to have a 1970's celica back in his prime, he rebuilt the gearbox in it and was showing me his old workshop manuals and how they went together.Manual gearboxes look pretty scary but their operation is pretty simple once you rebuild a few.
So i have somone with a press, and some know how, who has offered to help rebuild a gem box.
I just dont have any replacement bearings or syncro rings.

you can buy just the particular bits you need, i remember seeing a suppliers book with bits like that under the bench at my old work, cant remember the name though.
try repco ect ect, and maybe you might need to source your parts directly through a gearbox specialist workshop.
just as a point of interest, i got a quote (just for the hell of it) to rebuild the 5 speed box in my skyline. $1500, and that was drive in drive out, with warranty.

I did my box about 12 months ago. $140 for every seal and bearing in a proper kit. Took my mates old man about 5 hours and $100 to fit it up. Box is a bit shagged now and to my knowledge you cannot get syncro rings anymore...Maybe try a specialist shop.

Well usually 3rd / 4th dont cop nearly as much punishment as 1st / 2nd... if they where all physically the same dimensions, and it was impossible to buy new syncro's i thought it might be feasable.GEM-10W wrote:Just wondering what this would acheive? im intrigueddangerous_dave wrote:would it be possible to say, pull apart a 4 speed and put the 3rd / 4th syncro's on 1st / 2nd in the 5speed?
If you have 5 4 speeds with 3rd / 4th syncro's almost new... could you build an almost new 5 speed?
Could you machine some up on a lathe? Would you have to cut the teeth on a broach or somthing?

The thing in the front of the gearbox which the throwout bearing slides on. Also houses the input shaft seal. The bolt holes holding it on are drilled right through to inside where there's oil so you have to seal the threads.PSIGEM wrote:"Could replace the front seal too, don't forget to seal the drive gear bearing retainer bolt threads.."
Hey bungle what is the front seal your talking about and the drive gear retainer bolts? sorry i dont know much at all about g/box's
And cheers paddles for the part number
