Coil not giving spark - voltage query
Coil not giving spark - voltage query
Guys trying to get the g161 running in the TE -
Coil is not giving out spark.
Stock distributor with points.
Have the wiring as follows:
BY to ballast resistor and output of ballast resistor to positive side of coil
BW wire to positive side of coil
Wire from condenser (thats bolted onto the coil) to positive side of coil
BR red to negative side of coil
Wire from negative side of coil to distributor (points)
Have measured voltage at the coil and it's getting 12v on both the positive AND negative sides of the coils
Should the negative also be getting 12v?
Things to keep in mind :
I don't have the coil bolted down nor the ballast resistor (do they need to be bolted to the chassis to be earthed?)
Coil has been sitting for like 8 years so it could be fkd but wanted to ask here first before ditching it
Any help appreciated.
Mick

Re: Coil not giving spark - voltage query
You should get voltage on the negative side if the points are open, but not if they are closed. Check the continuity of the wire to the dissy.
You should only get 12 V when cranking the engine other wise about 9V via ballast resister.

Re: Coil not giving spark - voltage query
Thanks Toby
I'm seeing 12v static (i.e. Reds on) and that's on both sides of the ballast resistor - my understanding was that on "reds" and "cranking" the coil sees full voltage (via the BW wire direct to positive side of coil) to aid in cranking.
If you could confirm that would be appreciated
Also - let's assume for the sake of argument that points are closed and I'm still seeing 12v at negative - would this still stop the coil from giving spark? I can see it wouldn't run right but I thought the coil would still give spark
Trying to isolate as to whether it's coil that's all.
Thanks
Mick

Re: Coil not giving spark - voltage query
Never mind the above - clearly the points opening / closing create the breakdown : earth to create the differential at the coil +ve and -ve for the coil winding to discharge
Will check points gap and opening closing tomorrow

Re: Coil not giving spark - voltage query
Update
Checked the points they were fine
So tested resistance across coil (both primary and secondary) - the poles were pretty dirty so weren't giving a reading. Cleaned with some emery paper and got appropriate resistance across the positive and negative poles of the coil.
Moved onto the Centre Pole (the terminal that the coil lead goes out from to the dizzy) and got no reading. Contact cleaner, pulled the screw out of the coil, cleaned it up, and now getting intermittent resistance reading between 7 and 12,000 ohms.
Tells me it might be the coil but will try again on weekend

Re: Coil not giving spark - voltage query
Id just throw a new one in it anyway, at least that way you can completely rule it out

Yes but where's the learning in that :p

At least while you are waiting on the side of the road for a towey, you can sit smugly knowing you have clarity on the dicky coil issue.

Haha
Engine is coming out straight after rego so not too fussed about that

I said the same about mine....almost 12mths later im still driving it daily! Having said that its days are numbered now that the headgasket has started leaking

Re: Coil not giving spark - voltage query
Update - car ran today. Cleaned the poles a little more and also cleaned the dizzy cap centre pole and voila
And after all that, engine is coming back out tomorrow to make way for the 4zd1
Nice little experiment. Thanks to those who helped
