Diff Question

Post by Burntrubber »

I'm nearly finished converting a borgwarner diff into my Gemini I want to find out about this third arm that replaces the tourqe tube can anyone help. A pic of how it mounts would be great but any info will help... 8)

I'm normally not as harsh as Gemi Coupe but considering that you claim it's near completion, did you actually go through a design stage at some point in the big plan?

How the fook could it be "I'm nearly finished converting a borgwarner diff into my Gemini" when it's not even mounted, not even figured out how you plan on mounting it...

Is that it over there behind the shed in the trailer? looks to me like it only just got pulled from out of an XF Falcon. :?

Well I could take pics as proof but did'nt think I would have to  as for design yes well its 1260 flange to flange pinion is 35mm off center to the drivers side 950mm between spring seats and thats just a few things I measured before I started and I did search thats why I said I had read about a third arm!.

Not to sure what you mean I think the rules in New Zealand are a bit differant

Probably a wise move. He has to certify it so he knows what it needs to acheive the standard.

I pretty sure a ladder bar is legal here if you get it certed. I know another guy with a hilux diff who is running one from the rod shop and his car will be 100% legal.

Went and saw the cert guy, he said somthing similar to what it had when the housing was in the commodore or that ladder bar setup he was a bit busy so I left the diff there so he can have a proper think. I see in those links that were kindly provided gemini coupe that they have used the gemini tubes? Mine measured a lot smaller so I never even tryed fitting them that would have saved a lot of effort. Will pick it up on Monday or maybe tomorrow with a verdict on what to do. Want to get it all sorted buy christmass if I can still have to sort axels also. I don't like the look of that ladder bar looks like a lot of effort but probably the best option. Does it weld to the stardard mounts or just bolt to the tourqe tube mounts can't see in the pics at all. Also and I have searched it :D what drive shaft to use single or two piece?

Sorry bout the noob bit, i was just in one of those moods

As for the drive shaft, i would go with a two peice, it will keep driveline vibrations down and will be easier to set up your angles.
Have a look around at other vehicles with a two peice shaft and see which centre joint will suit your application. your going to need a custom built tailshaft anyway, so you may as well mix and match to get the best parts possible, Probably best to do a little research and then discuss it with a driveline/diff specialist.

Post some pics up of the progress, and maybe a step by step description, if its worthy, it'll make a good workshop article.

i would go a one pices.. less links in the chain to brake

Most modern cars have a two piece tailshaft. This is only to reduce vibration. (Have a look at one if you get a chance - One part is always longer than the other to reduce harmonic vibration. Clever!) For a performance car, this is a waste of time, and it should be replaced with a one piece unit.
I don't like the look of that ladder bar looks like a lot of effort but probably the best option.
if u ask me there probably the most easyest straight forward way of doing a conversion

no i think my spool in a gemini housing with 28 spline axles was the easiest to do and it now has vp disk brake rear.
