Repairing extractors?

Post by archangel62 »

So I'm buying some extractors for my "NA" G180W.. Getting a good deal, but they're pretty messed up with dents.

Has anyone experienced damaged extractors, and/or having them repaired? Cost, where to go, or what to do? How much I'd expect to pay an exhaust shop to weld in some new pieces of pipe? Any info appreciated.

I've just learnt to weld recently, mig (can oxy too, but don't have one of those). Are exhausts something you can mig weld new pipe pieces into easily enough? Beyond the average back-yardie? And would an exhaust get too hot for mig welds to survive? Forgive the noob welding question..

Pics of the damage - there are several spots. The worst is on the bottom of the extractors just before the o2 sensor and collector area:

doubt its very cost effective but i recon a a good idea would be to take them to an exhaust shop and ask them to make you a new set using the dented ones as an example

or you could have a go at it yourself???

can be mig welded and repaired by yourself, just cut out the bent bits and reweld in new exhaust pipe... still if i was you i would just look on ebay for a set in good condition they go from 50-100 normally.

if you wanted to repair them and do a mint job you would need to tig weld them.

For a G180W Twincam

I dont think so

And if it was me, I would buy one of them $20 slide hammers meant for panels. Wire brush up the dints, tack the slide hammer on and pull it out.

If you do it in the right spots you could get it back to fairly round

For twincam? If I could get a good twincam Gemini set for that I'd pounce, but I doubt it.

Maybe I should learn to TIG weld (read: learn what it means first lol)

Tungsten Inert gas Welding. Its alot like oxy welding, but the heat is more concentrated. Its not the easiest thing to do, but im sure you counld handle it lol

u can easily enough mig new bits in but i would imagine that it would afect thier performance, get new ones made up is probs the go if thats 2 costly mig and some steam pipe and away you go just bevel the edges slightly and the welds will run beter

A very good point, I do plan to test fit them before I go any further whatsoever.

Buggzy I reckon you'd make at least $300 on each set, probably more if you wanted to (but you wouldn't charge me more would you?? :D :D) hahaha..

I reckon I have TIG welded actually, it's still using the wire feed, electrode etc? If so, landlord has one of them out the back that I've been using to fix rust, and I reckon I could handle it for sure. I think my first point of call will be to tack weld a slide-hammer to the dents in what I can only hope are the right spots, and see what "damage" I can do pulling it out like that. Anyone know where to buy a slide hammer? I was looking for one a few months ago with no luck, to try to get a spigot bearing out...

You can get small ones from supercheap auto for $21.99, comes with screw on parts that you would tack on, and big enough for what you want i rekon

You might be thinking of mig? tig you use a filler rod just like oxy welding
