Some great progress there. AC lines look very neat!

Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
AC hard lines are done!

Finished stripping the wreck and now you can see that not one part of this was left straight!

I kept the floor pan and box sections near the front screen for rust repair panels.

Re: GEM77A Reincarnate - The Gem Reaper
I was never happy with how I had the radiator overflow bottle so something else had to be done. I had heard of Darren and others using the washer bottle as an overflow bottle but I still would like to use the windscreen washers. I found an overflow bottle on Fleebay that fits the washer bottle mount. It came with a mount so this will be used to relocate the washer bottle.

Kristy had a whole bunch of her family up this weekend so I ran away to work to make some things up.
First thing to sort was a compressor bracket. Arie had a few Rodeo kits but they have the compressor on the wrong side of the engine. Good for a last resort. So I got a bracket off Elky but it lacked strength, had a stupid way of tensioning the belt and had been f*#cked with.

So I ratted around the workshop and found another bracket that fits the compressor. I cut the mounts off the elky bracket and the "found" one (it had 1584cc Rodeo on the box but there is no way it would fit). Found a tensioner. Put it all together and tacked it up.

Test fitted or should I say put it next to the block and went "thats close enough".
Welded it all together and painted.
Made up a bracket to mount the washer bottle near the wiper motor.

Also made an idle up for the carb. I have no idea if it will work though.

Went to fit the compressor bracket and found that the dickhead who designed the bracket didn't take the oil filter into consideration so I had to get a smaller filter. Fitted the bracket and compressor then found that the crank pulley didn't line up. When I made the bracket I made it to line up with whatever lined up with the elky bracket which didn't line up with the pulley I had on there.
Luckily I had this. It's off a G200 Rodeo with power steering, I think!

I originally bought it to put power steering on a gem (never going to happen) but lines up perfect with the compressor.
Changed the engine pulley and found a belt.

Went to fix a leak on the exhaust flange by tightening it up a bit but found the thread in the manifold is stripped. s*#t!

Re: GEM77A Reincarnate - The Gem Reaper
Did absolutely nothing to the car on the weekend due to family commitments ie changing the split air con system on the roof (3 stories up mind you) of my parents place but I did fix the exhaust this arvo.
Luckily a 10*1.25 tap fitted nicely in the stripped out flange stud hole so I tapped the new thread in and again grabbed some thread adapters with an 8mm stud from work. The original stud is some imperial thread, I think, don't care! Put the new stud in with a thread adapter, new nut and Bob's my uncle. Actually he's not, he's Kristys dad.

Re: GEM77A Reincarnate - The Gem Reaper
So 2 days of fiddle farting about some small progress was made. Matt finished putting the seat belts back in and put the door sill trims on. Trying to remember how I wired this thing 4 years ago was a major headfuck! While I was trying to remember how the dash wiring went Matt did a job I was dreading. He stripped straight seat back frames from the front seats that were in this body. Then carefully pulled the bent frames out of the sienna coloured seats and swapped them over. Popped 2 stitches start to finish. I was impressed while still trying to figure out wiring and put the dash in.

Finally got the dash in and fitted the front seats. The bases needed a little tweeking but eventually went in.
Bolted 3 of the 4 jellybean rims on.

Refitted the stereo that came with this body as the Blaupunkt unit is now in the Barina. Its a Pioneer cd/tuner with stacker capability. As a bonus I have a Pioneer stacker to go with it. It was a freebie that I picked up but can't remember where from. Think a mate of mine gave it to me out of a car he stripped for a demo derby. I know its old school these days but beggers can't be choosers!
While I was buggering around fitting the head unit I jammed up the top vent slide control and in the process of un jamming it I broke this bit.

Not a problem I thought as I have spares. After I pulled every box of spares out and spread them all over the garage I found one.

Going to do something different for the centre console where the shifter used to be. Going to modify this to make a coin tray type thing. I think its a blend door from an E series Ford heater box.

Re: GEM77A Reincarnate - The Gem Reaper
Matt decided to do a bit more and so removed the door cards, handles, lock barrel and mirror mount from the white doors. The plan is to just rub the outside back a bit on the 3 straight doors and give them a fresh coat of paint. The drivers door is a different story and I'll get to that later.
Then he stripped all the paint off the boot lid.

There's a few small dents and rust pits but pretty good.
I finished it off for the time being with some etch primer.

Re: GEM77A Reincarnate - The Gem Reaper
I couldn't sleep so I thought I would do an update. It's been a while but I have been doing a little. There were a couple of weekends there that were stupidly hot so all I did was sit inside the house.
I scrounged through all my Kadett headlight bits and put together a pair of RHD H4 headlights. Even found a couple of working lamps to go with them. Did the same modifications to them as before to clear the battery and expansion tank then installed them. Fitted up the spot lights as well.
DSC_0102 (Medium) by Justin Sherwood, on Flickr
Made up a few small wiring harnesses for the new bits in the engine bay. One to run the fans and compressor, one to extend the washer bottle power and one to finally finish powering up the ammeter and clock in the centre console.
DSC_0103 (Medium) by Justin Sherwood, on Flickr
DSC_0108 (Medium) by Justin Sherwood, on Flickr
Put it all in and immediately blew a fuse. Found that the dickhead who wired the relays got the coils and switch contacts arse about. Fixed that little problem and everything works.
Next I tackled the bent drivers door. Most of the outside skin was straight except for a nice 30 degree bend at the bottom right in the middle. The inside was another story! Most of it was caved in a good 50mm to the point you couldn't wind the window down. So after screws, wood, a FBH, kicking, standing on and a lot of swearing it is now as straight as it's going to be. It will still need copious amounts of bog on the lower panel inside as it now looks like one of the shooting range ducks you see at the show. I once blew the head off one of those ducks and the f#*ker stayed up! Oh well s*#t happens!
This is after pissing about getting the bend out of the bottom.

The guards were the next mission. The passenger side is off the wreck. It had a lovely twist to it but as it is rust free I thought it worth trying to save not to mention the more off the old car the more it means, if you're in to that.
The drivers side is one that was originally intended for the first car. I had a patch panel fitted to the bottom all those years ago so again rust free. Just needs a bit of work.
So after more beating, pushing and pulling the passenger guard is close. Test fitted the drivers door and guards. Not a bad fit considering!
Filled the dents and hollows in both guards as best I could and started bogging the inside of the drivers door. I am not showing you that bit as it is ugly! Got a coat of primer on them but they still need work.
Filled the 2 dents in the boot lid then primer.

Re: GEM77A Reincarnate - The Gem Reaper
The guards got a layer of spray putty.

While the guards were drying I made up a new tail pipe. The original one was mangled in the accident and this body didn't have one when I bought it. Also the one on the coupe was pretty ratshit so I had nothing that would go straight on. So I ripped tailpipe/hotdog off the coupe, had the remains of the original and a chrome chair strut body from work.

I cut the bend and bracket off the hotdog muffler then welded all three pieces together. Gave it a paint to help hide my dodgy welds and fitted it.

Next I filled the bottom section inside the drivers door with bog and sanded back. There is approx 1kg of bog in this bit. I did say it was ugly!

Sanded the guards back and sealed with primer. The drivers side is just about right and I almost got away with one layer of spray putty on the passenger side. It should be right with one more layer.

Sanded the small sections of bog in the drivers door and sealed with primer. It will need a little spray putty to smooth it out properly.

Painted the tail light surrounds and centre garnish. The colour is simply a metallic black this time but the badge is the original with the greeny black still on it. I left it as a reminder of the original car plus more to the point I couldn't be f*#cked redoing it. The badge, even though bears some scars from the accident is still in better condition than the one that came with this car.

Painted the grille. I am not happy with it so it still needs a bit of work.

You may have noticed masking tape on the grille? That's because I'm doing something different this time, well sort of. I have done it before to a different car but I'm still not sure if it will have the effect I'm after. We will see!
