TURBOG200(My first gem project)

Post by Poida'z gem »

Hey everyone,

I wanted to do this write up in the "Project Forum" but it was taking to long for me to get approval. So i guess this is the next best place.

Around this time last year was when i first started getting into Gemini's and by around October i had saved up enough to buy me first one :D:D:D

79 TD

I paid a bit more and got one with a mint paint job with only miner body work simply because i don't have much time to have it ready in.
At first i was just going to do a modded 2L and slap a big carby on it, uno as ya do... But after doing some research and getting a pay rise i disided to rebuild and turbo the 2L hopefully using the turbo kit of this site....

http://www.giant.net.au/users/wight/Blo ... 0carby.htm

Although i did read somewhere that this guy might not be running anymore??? hopefully he is still

Anyway here are some pictures....

Thats the morning after i bought her. When she had Astra hub caps;) haha! N the trusty transit in the background.

At me mates house with his 2L escort. Rear end begin to be lowed!

Got me road worthy and dropd her on its spink!

Image
Next i had to get rid of those retro square lights and go back to old school:D:D:D my other project in the back ground "1977 BMW 633csi"

Image
So i work next to a wreckers n this puppy happend to come along one day, so i snatch it up for parts.

Image
Shame bowt it though

Image
Got a bit of body work to do on the boot still.

Image
Stole the center peice outa the coupe and started working on my interior

Shity pictures but i got some new tyres put on the aloys. Also got some nice old school looking chrome mirrors on her.

Well thats about it atm. Next job, the engine! haven't disided whether to do it myself or get racegem to build me a turbo spec engine??? depends on time and money....

If anyone wana give me any comments, hints or ideas please do!

Also would int mind knowing abit more about that turbo kit and racegems motor rebuilds?

Thanks mate!

Apparently the guy that owned the coupe owed some money to the wrong people. A shame about it though, i was going to keep it if it hadn't been for the roof being so damaged :(

Ben does some good work but dude, i wouldnt bother with a carby turbo setup. Their a pain to get right and get consistant.

If you do your research well, youll be able to get a proper EFI turbo setup [excluding engine rebuild] for just over 2k. It cost me and a mate the following amount to do his -

- Manifold, T03 ex-VL Turbo and intercooler $600
- EMS Dual Sport Fuel/Ign ECU - $400
- 3" mandrel exhaust - $450
- Cooler piping $20 [made it ourselves]
- Misc [XF throttle, modifying plenum, oil lines etc] $200
- Fuel setup - carter lift, surge tank, vlt fuel pump, vlt fuel reg, along with custom dizzy, wiring ecu and tune all fitted by workshop, 1000.

See what im getting at?

Yeah i had been thinking that. I like the idea of a carby thats all... if i was to get it dyno tuned it would be alright would int it? Or do they tend to go out ov tune? I thought webbers were fairly good when it comes to that?

Carby setups tend to go out of tune, yes. Keep in mind also that while through various mods you can control the timing curve from the dizzy, you still have no control over fuel delivery with the carby. While it might be safe up top, itll probably be too fuely or maybe lean through other parts of the rev range. Not what youd call a great thing.

Going EFI is worth every cent mate. With James's gem, it made 100rwkw on 7psi with a blown headgasket. Cant ask for much more then that. As a point of reference, he had a carby-turbo [draw through] setup on his old gem. That made 90rwkw but made nowhere near as good torque/response and blew a headgasket within 2weeks. Also cost him around the same $$$ to setup. I should have photos of it somewhere, ill see if i can find them.

If you have access to a welder, you should be able to do it fairly cheap.

it would defiantly make sense to go injected. but i don't know much about it and finding all the parts would end up being a bitch. if i could find a complete setup for a good price i would probably grab it. if i could find one selling with the turbo setup as well it would be like sex:D

But other wise i guess i would put up with having to get my weber tuned once a year or so...
