Nissan VG30ET V6 Turbo, TF Gemini, went to the dyno!

Post by iViLe »

This is the original project thread here: http://www.holdengemini.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=799

Anyway here are some pics I managed to get before the camera went flat.

I only just got it going, It still needs a tidy up, once I know where everything has to go and works correctly I will tidy it up and powder coat some parts.

Basically It's a VG30ET out of a mid 80's 300zx, 100% stock even the turbo running the stock 6.8psi, has a hawk ecu.

I did everything myself, engine and trans mounts, wiring etc, Only things I didnt do are the exhaust and the turbo oil and clutch lines.

That big bell looking thing on the right off the map sensor near the front of the manifold is the pop off valve, it opens at 8psi, so until I piss it off I can't run more than 8psi... stock boost is 6.8psi

Image
Custom Volvo radiator install, Its not leaking it's just where the overflow line went before I went and bought a overflow bottle for it, Which I only found out when taking the pics that I had the lines on it around the wrong way, so the water wasn't going back into the radiator....

Relays and boost control solenoid, needs a good tidy up, I will also move the coil further away.

There not as close as they look in the pic

i remember reading your project thread on holdengemini.net, but i can't remember the exhaust manifold running around the front of the motor, i though it wrapped around the back, that s*)ts crazy

well done on doing something different though

Yeah on the standard engine they run around the back of the engine, The exhaust manifolds I have used are off a fwd maxima and I just flipped them around so the outlet is towards the front.

Yeah, I had to do it all in the front yard, half grass half stones! but oh well lol.

Yeah that's the diff I had to buy and weld up, It normally runs an lsd but it wast shimmed up correctly and 5 pinion teeth broke off, so just running a welded diff for the time being. Yeah spins the wheels in 3rd gear, but needs a new clutch.

Yeah It's a Bosch one was thinking of using it in place of that stupid pop off valve, I just don't know what its vent pressure is and which way it goes. Any ideas? :)

Looks like I have blown a head gasket in it. I can hardly turn it over by hand, so I think a cylinder might be full of water :)

of and one other thing, did I read correctly on holdengemini.net that you say these motors have the same bellhousing pattern as a v6 commodore?

DryftKult, yeah that was a t5 gearbox but I found out that they use a different input shaft compared to the holden v6, Plus I ended up using a nissan box as the t5's are basically a pos.

I have another complete vg30et which I will pull apart and rebuild with forged pistons and rods, port the heads a bit :)

Gene FJ20DEBT
Yeah had to be different and plus they fit way better than an out of date holden v6, The only thing I had to cut was the hole for the shifter and move the battery, other wise its unbolt the mounts and into another gemini. Its so smooth too, it idles at 750 and the car hardly moves seeing as its basically solid mounted.

I need to upgrade the front brakes first and that should be all, I will upgrade the diff later on. It is still registered and I drive it around, just like a normal person, I had the exhaust made really quiet, probably even quieter than the stock gemini exhaust. All you can hear is the turbo when you give it a bit.

As you can see the head gasket was blown, But I really have no idea how old it was, might be the original one. :) Oh well I was doing a pull from about 50kph in 5th gear when it happened, no wonder the radiator hose popped off. still drove it for a bit then It got hot.
