Hows Everyones Stock Brakes Feel?

Post by jboz1992 »

Hi All,

I just want to get an idea of what every ones stock brakes feel like.

Is anyone able to describe what their brakes feel like?

I guess im trying to figure out if mine are as they should be... I have a about 2" pedal travel before braking happens and the pedal is pretty much in the carpet before any real hard braking happens. is this normal? ive replace front rotors and pads, readjusted read brake shoes, changed master cylinder for a known working one.

Cheers

Differs with the model. Have no trouble with the feel and travel on TX, TF and TG but the Girlock and PBR brakes on TC, TD and TE I have had trouble with.

Note that the self adjusters on gemini rear drum brakes seldom work so I would adjust up the shoes before further diagnosis.

If everything is adjusted up properly then you are probably missing the reaction disc out of the booster. When you separate the master cylinder from the booster it can fall out and float around inside the booster.

Have you checked the brakes as well? Is it bleeding off or just a low pedal

Check rear drum adjustment for sure. If in doubt you can clamp the rear soft line before the diff and try the brakes again, you should get like 1cm/stuff all pedal travel with the rear line clamped off. If you've adjusted the rear brakes but they still seem to be the culprit, you could have play in the drums, I had this on one Gemini and tried everything under the sun before replacing the diff and finding it was fixed. My money would be on either the rear circuit or what gemsince88 said.

On anything besides the TX, stock brakes should feel like an average car, maybe an inch of travel and then plenty of bite, definitely nowhere near the floor. On a TX with the remote reservoir, the master is slightly bigger (7/8" versus 3/4") and should start to bite pretty much right from the top.
