Turbo Hyperthetical
Turbo Hyperthetical
Hyperthetical question.
1) If a turbo breaks from to much play what are the likely events that are going to occur with the motor?
For example, blowing smoke, not revving etc etc.
Just a hypertheical as some one is selling me a mtoor with a possible blown turbo but unsure what they are talking about and would appreciate some ideas that the motor would be doing.
Thanks.

Depends a lot on the phrase 'blown'.
Could just mean that it has seized which isn't a huge problem. Just needs either a new turbo or the current turbo to be reco'd.
If it is broken, then theres problems. If it falls apart, where do the bits go? If it's on the compressor (intake) side, then the chunks get to go for the good old induction ride, through the intake (not a larger issue) and into the head (yay time). From there it can break valves, keep valves open, smash the compression chamber and plugs, smash the pistons, get caught tween the pistons and bores creating OMGBBQ problems (IE: It writes the block off), then back out the arse through the exhaust, taking out the turbine side of the turbo, blocking mufflers/cats etc.
Yay for you. Hypothetically speaking of course

depends, on what side of the turbo f*#cked up from shaft play, inlet side can cause a impeller to shatter and go thru the engine and if it is the exhaust side it mostly get's blown into the exhaust ,oil's seal's in the turbo will cause it to blo smoke, exhaust wheel in the turbo broken, not revving could be a number of things,

You know what I'd do... pull the turbo off and take it to a turbo repairer. Have them seperate the casing and inspect it. Might be just a simple replace bearings and seals but 20mm play would normally mean that turbine rotor has been banging the insides of the housing. That might mean bits have broken off (bad sign)while also damaging the housing and rotors. You need to first evaluate the cost of repairing that turbo as well as know if something has gone into the engine. If parts of the inlet turbine blades are broken off, PASS!!
