The duratec head gasket blew most likely from number 4 cylinder running lean and creating a hot spot. Running an NA G180Z motor with individual weber carbies in IPRA competition. Have been advised to get a MLS gasket and ARP head studs. But where can you get these parts.

Re: Duratec head gasket
Thomas for parts?
What compression are you running? Mine did similar to a duratec gasket, then changed to MLSS. No probs yet, but I haven't really put it under load yet.

Compression is 10.7/1 on 98 octane.
Re: Duratec head gasket
Didnt think 10.7:1 was high enough to cause those sorts of problems. Some more details may help - what bore size are you running, 84 or 87mm?

Just sourced an MLS for my DOHC through him so you should be able to get one off him. As for the ARPs, any ARP supplier should be able to get them for you. Cant remember the part number for them but pm Moley he may know as i believe he just ordered some for himself.

86.7mm is the bore size
Re: Duratec head gasket
202-4207 rb26dett head stud kit.
From previous experience,
Cylinder 4 is the worst offender, look into the coolant bypass options like I have done keeps the back of the head cool.
You really need to make sure your timing is spot on, if you go MLS gasket and studs and it's detonating you will smash the ring lands out of the piston.
I have had all of these issues in the past.

Re: Duratec head gasket
Yep, i did this to mine. See pics
Coolant from water pump comes from the front of the motor under the inlet manifold to the hole I tapped in the back of the head, forcing colder coolant to flow around this area.
Next mod for me will be an electronic water pump and some extra plumbing to the back of the motor if I have issues.

Re: Duratec head gasket
Did my version of water bypass between cylinders three and four from old heater outlet in head. I tapped a 3/8 bsp fitting into manifold so water can circulate from cylinders 3 & 4 through inlet manifold tap and heater hose into existing heater hose return at base of thermostat. Car now running with new permatex graphite head gashet. Off to lapsprints next weekend. Thanks for the ideas & advice
