Sailsbry diff info. LSD for your gem possibly
Ive been searching for a bit of info on the borgwarner diff in this 84 LTD that amazingly appeared on my front lawn and i came across this.
Its from streetcommodores dot com. i cant post a link to the thread as it wont let me, i had to enter via the main page and the forum popup. (Ive got the forums index addy its in a link down the bottom). I searched for "diff" as i was looking for "the ultimate diff thread" that my google search had found.

Up until Feb/March 85, all commodores had salisbury diffs
These were available in 2 sizes - the 178mm ring gear version (the small sals - identified by a round cover plate) and the 190mm ring gear version (the large sals) identified by an egg-shaped cover plate.
Tha large sals was only available with the 5L
the small sals was put in all others, 4 cylinder, all 6 cylinders, and the 4.2L - the 4.2L had a larger yoke than the 4/6 versions.
Apart from the first 200 VB 4.2L diffs, all 4.2L diffs have disk brakes.
The only way to get discs on a 6 cylinder diff was in an SL/E or Calais - but the VK Calais 6s were all EFI, and the EFI ran a 4.2L size yoke...
Apart from that, it was a costly option available only on the mid-range models.
Confused yet?
Now, the small sals had the following ratios (extremely rare LSD optional):
2.78:1 (generally fitted to SL/E 6 & 4.2)
3.08:1 (generally fitted to VB/C SL & VH SL/X 6 & 4.2)
3.36:1 (generally behind base model 6s, and most 2.85s)
3.55:1 (much rarer, only optionally available)
3.9:1 4 cylinder only - torana stud pattern.
The big sals (both with optional LSD - relatively available):
2.60:1 (VH SL/E 5L only)
3.08:1 (most other 5L)
I have never seen one, but some people reckon a 3.55:1 large sals was made, but I have absolutely no part numbers in any listings for one.
Thats the relavant part of the thread.
Commodorenut also posted up some helpful pics;
They even had a polite banter about welded diffs on the street. lol.

All you need to do now is get looking at the wreckers. lol
Cheers. Bob

The centre itself should be the exact same unit as found in the gemini one would think. The Gemini diff wasnt mentioned in the first few pages of the thread i read, neither was the UC Torana diff.Gene FJ20DET wrote:so in short would i be correct saying:
"3.9:1 4 cylinder only - torana stud pattern. - small salsbury diff would be a bolt in swap for a gemini diff?"
I wont insult your inteligence by asking if you meant the whole diff........ oops i just did. lol.
Cheers. bob.

The small salisbury needs to be modded slightly to fit into the Gemini Housing. All you need to do is get yourslef a small salisbury LSD centre and then read my post:

Don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but it's relevant...
How much stronger are the 178mm non-LSD and LSD Salisbury centres? I've heard the LSD is quite weak...
And would this allow Commodore/Torana axles (much stronger than Gemini axles I'd assume) to be used, given some work like cut and respline, changed stud pattern etc? I'm just trying to figure out how much can be replaced with wreckers parts, and legally, without the ladder bar stuff etc.

Ok, this is quite an old thread, but the same question has brought me here - I have in my posetion some shortened 28 spline commodore axels, and a tx gem with a td diff fitted by the previous owner. It sounds to me like a small salisbery LSD center would fit in the td housing with these axels.. can anyone confirm this?
Sorry to rain on your parade, but the small salsbury
is only 25 spline, they were only 28's on the bigger V8
salsbury, witch won't fit the gem housing, if you wana
use your 28 spline axle's you will have to go with a spool
i've sourced them thought a place called G&J diff's in
melbourne.
And just to clear this whole Borgwaner thing up,
The govement of the time demanded that a certain amount
part's in Oz built car had to be built in Oz, witch is why you
find holden diff gear's inside a borgwarner housing, even
thought borgwaner didn't do anything other then the housing
in the gemini, so stop looking for borgwarner diff part's
to fit inside your gem diff guy's

Who said borgwarner???
They are a sailsbury.
Your other option could be to have the shortened large sailsbury in the Gemini. Youve got the axles, but chances are they wont be the right length, usually the housing determins the length the axle should be not the axle telling you what diff width you need.
